A Saturday in Oldenburg

Oldenburg ...

I lived in Oldenburg between 2004 and 2013 (with a year break in Sydney/Australia in 2008/2009). I got two of my uni degrees from the uni there and also undertook my teacher-training in the area. Over the years I lived in three different flats and saw the city grow from a sleepy students town to a rich (sometimes snobby), booming town. Altogether I loved Oldenburg even though it was a bit too small for me in the end. I longed to live in a bigger town again (return from Sydney to Oldenburg was a bit of a shock).

As you might know we moved to Dortmund last year (and love it here). Last weekend we drove up north to visit my parents, my grandparents and some friends. We ended up spending half a day in Oldenburg. The weather was lovely and thus we had a good stroll through the city. Some things changed, some things didn't. I thought I would become homesick but it didn't happen. I had a good time living in Oldenburg but now Dortmund is home! :-)

We had coffee and cakes in a lovely café and I even managed to do some crochet (testing Michelle's new pattern).

The weather was great, so we could walk through the town and marvel at the great old buildings.

We also visited my granny the next day and I finally got a picture of the wreath I made for her birthday! :-)

  1. That wreath is beautiful. So is the scenery you have shared.
You are a different person now to who you were when you were a student. It makes sense that you were no longer homesick. Oldenburg had its place in your life and has shaped who you are and now Dortmund is "where you're at".
But to your granny, you will always be her granddaughter Anne. I am sure she always thinks of you when she sees your pretty crochet artistry.

  2. Hello Anne! Thanks for sharing your lovely photos! (I don't know North Germany much at all, coming from the South!) I'm sure it must be lovely to go back there from time to time to visit, but home is wherever you are! Looking forward to seeing what you are 'testing'!!!
    Happy sunday!

    1. The north of Germany is very lovely - quite different from the south! I only know a few places in the south, so I think I need to explore more!

    2. Ooh! I must tell my daughter to add Oldenburg and Bremen to her list of German Christmas Markets to visit. She was in Berlin at Christmas last year and just LOVED the Christmas Market tradition. We don't have that here in Australia. My daughter has vowed to return to Germany in search of more Christmas Markets. Any recommendations to excellent markets will be warmly received! :-)

  5. Such nice pictures of this beautiful town. I've once been to Oldenburg because a friend of mine married there. It is a town full of history. But I know Dortmund much better because I've grown up in Hemer, a small town about 40 km from Dortmund. We always did our bigger shoppings there. It is not a pretty town but very lively and with nice outskirts. I can understand that you like it there. My sister finished her bachelor in Dortmund just a couple of weeks ago. Funny, isn't it? The wreath you've made is so cute, I love wreaths and especially the once Lucy from attic24 has made. But they are such work with all the small details she adds to every wreath. Do you know them? Have a nice sunny day, Viola

    1. Oldenburg is a nice place to get married! Some friends of mine got married in the city garden some years back: So beautiful!

Oh, I heard of Hemer (haven't been there yet though). The boyfriend works at the uni in Dortmund (so do I until the end of this year). Funny that I could have seen your sister there! The world is soo small!

I know Lucy's wreaths. They were my inspiration but they were too full for my granny, so I decided to go with a more minimalistic version. I want to make a wreath like Lucy's autuum wreath one day for myself though!

  6. That wreath is so great! And Oldenburg looks like a lovely beautiful town. But life is about moving forward too. :) Glad you didn't feel homesick! What gorgeous weather you had too. Not like the rain I had when I was in Dortmund haha ;)

  7. Looks like a beautiful town. I like the wreaths, too. Years ago, I crocheted one that was white with red roses. I gave it away, tough. Wreaths are on my crochet projects list.
